Private Ham is named after the first chimpanzee that went into space, called Ham. Ham’s mission was to see if humans could perform tasks in space, which turned out to be successful. He flew for 16 minutes and 39 seconds long. After his safe return to Earth, he lived for 17 years first at the National Zoo, Washington D.C. and later the North Carolina Zoo.
